Switzerland's Lake Maggiore is breathtaking, picturesque location that fits the site for an innovative prefabricated guest house designed by British architect Richard Horden. Built specifically overlooking the lake, it was even delivered on site via helicopter. Installed in less than five minutes, the house is made from space-age lightweight aluminium and can accommodate a double bed and dinning table that can fit in up to eight people.
Holden first developed the Micro Compact Home concept in 2005 when he planned to create a functional yet comfortable home in the footprint of a 2.6-meter-wide cube. And a decade has past, he has managed to built up to seven of these tiny houses in Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and the United States.
The homeowners have used this house as a place where their visiting family and friends can stay. Unlike the standard micro home that Holden designed, the homeowners have requested to enlarge it by one meter in the southern direction so that it can accommodate a full-sized double bed and extra space for the dining table. The champagne-colored micro home just only weighed 1.8 tons.
Aside from a heavy-duty helicopter to carry the prefabricated structure, a ground crew of three engineers have radio contact with the pilot so that the structure can be positioned correctly unto the three 35-mm. diameter holes in the aluminium sub-frames.
It also manages to fit in a guest bed, dining and work space, a bathroom fitted with toilet shower and a kitchen with microwave and refrigerator. To keep itself comfortable, the micro home has air conditioning, LED lighting with beige leather surface and a custom-designed space for its Geneva sound system and Nespresso coffee machine.
It is expected that energy consumption for the the Micro Compact Home will be about 4-5 kilowatt hour per day in over a year. The land around it is specially prepared with foundation pads with the water, waste, electricity and Internet already set up and ready for immediate connection after aerial installation. While, the landscaping and natural dry stone walls have been laid so that the micro home can fit and blend well with the beautiful garden.
