This is a repost of the article "Space Saving Tips in your Singapore HDB Flat" posted on August 15, 2014 in my other blog Going to Singapore.
Singapore is one of the most densely populated places on Earth and in a country where space is a premium, you have to learn how to live with it. You have to be creative enough to find ways how you can maximise your space without compromising your comfort zone.
Saving space doesn't mean that you have to live in a box. We really hate the feeling when you're forced to throw away something you really love (not the significant other by the way!) because there's no more space in your house. But the reality is, we really have to pair down and throw away stuff that's just accumulating dust on the side.
Here are helpful tips on how you can save space in your HDB flat:
1. Bed Storage
Use the dead space under your bed to store your bedding and other personal items. You may want to drop by at IKEA and look for a multi-purpose beds that doubles as a storage space.
2. Loft Bed plus Closet Space
If you are young and hip, that means you have a lot of personal stuff. Why not have an elevated bed with its own closet space in it? The fact is that most HDB flats don't have a walk-in closet that can accommodate the space it takes up but having a dual-purpose bed then it would be possible.
3. Integrate Study-Work Space into the Bed
We all know that the bed is a dead space since you are only going to use it when you go to sleep or if you're just lazy to go up. Why not integrate your study-work area into it? How? Create a makeshift one by installing shelves by your bedside. Use your bed as a chair and if you ever need a break from all that studying you've not been doing, then just lie down and take a nap on your bed.
4. Pull Out Guest Bed
Partying all night at Clarke Quay and you have unexpected guests who may want to spend the night? Why not pull out a guest bed? In the day it acts as an office table and at night, it can be turned into a guest bed.

Singapore is one of those countries where spaces are really limited. It makes sense that they would need to maximise what floor area they have and for the market to cater to those needs.
ReplyDeleteIn a country where space constraint is inevitable for almost every household, smart storage hacks are really useful. I personally recommend storage beds and ottomans which I bought for my house. The key is to create space at every nook and cranny that you can find.
