Typhoon-Proof Mini Dome Houses

Who would have thought that igloo-looking mini dome houses can be an ideal low-cost public housing solution for a typhoon-scourged Philippines? The Texas-based Monolithic home builders have set up shop in the country where they specialized in constructing typhoon-proof houses that can withstand powerful winds of up to 400 kph for only P290,000 per unit.

About 200 dome homes will be built in Dapitan City in Mindanao with basalt as the main strengthening component since it cannot be destroyed by typhoons, earthquakes, or fires. Green technology ensures that the materials won't harm the environment. The basalt will be melted at 2,000ºF wherein the 6-12 microns thin strands are then be pulled out, banded together, and ran through an adhesive.

The design is revolutionary since it minimizes drag so that strong winds won't be able to uproot the roof, walls or foundation.

Why not build more of these tiny houses in typhoon-prone areas?
